The Governor

To each item below, don't just simply answer the questions.  Discuss why you feel the way you do.

Given the situation in the colonies, what makes a good governor?  What skills do you think this person should have?  Should they have been only male?

Given modern times, are the skills required of someone in our government any different?

Consider leadership roles on campus:  professors, coaches, team captains, etc.  Consider authority, rules, and rule enforcement.  What skills are needed in these positions?

Don't just repeat the thoughts of the poster before you!!!

  1. I think a good governor or any kind of leader has to have some abilities that most of his followers don't have, such as more educated, motivated and hard worker. Also you have to be one step ahead the rest, and the previous governor of the colonie let a barrel of fish to be wasted. Also as the man from the company that came to help the colony said, his job is to make success the company or in this case the colony no matter if the people don't like you. And in that period it was normal that only male could be governors but in the modern times we know females have the skills to be a leader.

  2. A good governor is someone that's willing to listen to his/her people, but also be able to set set precidence and rules that his followers should obey for the sake of the colony. They should make people want to do what they ask, and not have to demand it (this is harder said than done). They should be patient, understandering of all viewpoints, fair, and yet strong enough to follow through with their own commands. If the time was the 17th century, anything other than a male leader would have been considered odd. However, today, both men and women have proven to make fine leaders; as a society, we've come very far in closing the gender gap.

Skills required back then vs today would've been much different. Today, one would most likely need a college degree of some sort (if not more). Back then, leaders needed more survivalist type skills - how to hunt, fish, farm, build, etc.

In a college setting, any and all people that have authority need to be able to talk to students and peers, and need to have the respect of said students and peers. Patience is very important, as well as the ability to feel confident about their position - few people will follow someone that doesn't want to be followed.

  3. A good governor during that time period is someone with survival skills and someone who can bring people together when needed. Someone who is a good governor would be able to organize people into groups to get tasks done and help the colony become successful in such a way that they are no longer in debt to their sponsors. I believe that they should have been both male and female, but back then it was never even a thought to have a woman be a leader of something unless it was in the kitchen or the house.

Today the leaders have to have different skills, they don't have to have any type of survival skills, they just need stills to argue a topic to get things achieved for a nation. Back then the skills needed were 100% survival and the ability to bring people together to work as a unit.

On campus leaders are people that have respect. The people that have respect are always going to be professors because that is a given, they teach us and lead us to success. Coaches have respect because they again help lead students to success on and off the field or court, as well as pushing players to be thei best they can be. Then there are captains of teams, they normally have to earn respect and lead by example otherwise teammates will follow in their footsteps, but not in a good direction.

  4. When the colonies were first being formed in the early days of The United States of America, each one of these colonies needed a leader or a governor to prevent chaos so that the colonies could then thrive. In the reality television show where there are several modern people that are sent to a secluded area to learn how to live as those did who first settled in America. On this television show the people that are part of the colony are in need of a good governor, after the former governor had to leave the project due to family issues. I would define a good governor as someone who knows the land, and how to grow crops. It would also be someone who knows how to hunt and be able to get the people in the colonies a type of mean to eat, and have the knowledge to trade with other settlements or natives of the land. A good governor would also be someone who knows the people living there well enough to get them to complete tasks the colony is in need of without abusing his authority. In the sixteenth century woman were thought as of lesser compared to men. One example of that is that males were able to be a governor of a colonies. In my opinion I do not thing one has a clear advantage over the other as being governor. I think that either male or female would make a good governor depending on their traits, knowledge, and leadership skills.
A governor in modern times has many different responsibilities then governors in the colonial time period. Governors today have to have a political view on things and obstacles. Governors today also don’t have the big responsibility to make sure the colony survives. Governors from the colonial time needed to ensure that their people would survive and better the community, they also needed the skills or hunting, fishing, and growing crops.
Leadership roles on campus are similar to both the past and present governors. Leaners on campus need to keep order to ensure there will be no chaos. Leaders here need to have the ability get students to complete an assignment or to show up to practices or games, this is similar to a governor in the colonies needing has colonist to complete tasks efficiently. They also have the responsibility to make sure their people have the resources to thriving in their enticement.

  5. A good governor should be able to lead his colony. He should also be able to find a way to make his colony flourish. To be a good governor you have to be fearless and have courage. You have to make the right decisions because if you don't you can hurt the colony. The most important is to be honest and be trustworthy. Some small skills that you need to be a good governor is knowing how to build, fish, hunt, and farm. I think that it should have only been male leaders because I just don't think that women were ready to run a colony.

In the government today the skills required are completely different. Theres more resources for the government now. Everything back in that time was about survival and worrying about building houses and expanding and having something to eat at night. Now the government worries about security, money and taxes, and political issues.

To be a good coach you have to know the game you're coaching. The qualities are similar to being a leader in a colony. You have to have a desire to see your program do great. You need to be a hard worker and you can never give up.

  6. I think a good governor around that time period should have the ability to keep everyone and everything together we needed, also I think the a governor should have survival skills to teach the people who aren't informed. I also feel like the governer could be a male or female, as long as the person has the right things they need to be a good governer.

Now a days leaders have all different kinds of skills. Skills that we have today would have been completely different back then because of the point of time it's in. Now a days, to have that role you would have to do years and years of college and graduate. Back then, there wasn't that many of stages of education to go through to get that point.

There're many different roles of leadership on campus but they are different ways to get that role. For example, to be a football captain you have to be a leader on and off the field. Also you have to be able to communicate with your teammates, reinforce and help teammates, and also you have to be able to encourage teammates to do better and that could be in class, on the field, or even out in public.

  7. to be a leader it doesnt matter who you are. to be leader all you have to do is lead by example, have faith in people that work for you, or works with you. a good leader is someone who pushs their peers to be better, they make sacrifies for people. and never give up on any one, they see potential in everbody. and they fait in e eryone. it ruly doesnt matter gender, becuase sometimes girls can be better leaders at times, you ever heard "always trust a womens intuiton.

  8. The skills of the people to be governor is to had all outdoor and and active skills like fishing and cooking and hunting etc. a leader of such would of been a man that could help do all those things rather than just a head figure the best choice may be a man for it but they can always have a high consultant being a woman because she would be able to solve problems men can’t and would be able to balance out the things that men would lack as leaders an as far as now a day government it is not required the same because they don’t really have to do anything active to help just have to over see things and make sure people are following and doing what they are supposed to be doing and coaches yes they have to be active and teachers that are laid back on explaining things and with helping and boring are no help at all and pointless to be in that role to help someone just like if the governor back in times is lazy he’s pointless To be there

  9. a governor back in those times should have all the survival skills there is, he should be putting his life on the line for his colonie. im not saying that you have to be a male but in that time it should be a male because they are more reliable and im pretty sure back then they have better survival skills and they also don't have to worry about getting pregnant because they're obviously not a female. But a female should always be around to take care of them because theyre some things the male cant do with out a female. But being a leader dont matter whether your male or female thats just something thats within yourself and how you carry yourself.

  10. A governor back in colonial time needed to be a strong leader who could contribute with their citizens with manual labor, has strong wildlife skills like hunting or fishing, and also the capability to understanding the citizens in the town so you can make strong bonds with everyone there. It doesn't matter to me who will be governor it could be a man or a female but if anyone could follow those examples then I wouldn't have any problems with them.
