Given:
1. your previous educational experience (especially high school)
2. the environment you are familiar with
3. the book Farmer Boy (as discussed in class)
From both a historical and a modern perspective, what are your thoughts on school violence?
ReplyDeleteSchool violence has always been a major issue in school systems. In the book The Farmer Boy we learned that it was a problem many years ago as well. However today school violence seems as if it is more of an issue in current years. One reason I think that it seems this way is because in the world we live in today everyone has a camera constantly documenting everything that happens. So, it seems as if school violence is more of a prevalent issue. Over the many years between now and the year the book takes place the violence in school could gradually be getting more involved. Violence in the school system is neither good for students or teacher. Worries of school violence can cause a great amount of stress on students and make it hard to concentrate in classes and reach their full potential of their academics in that class.
As we see in The Farmer Boy, school violence is not a new topic, over the years there has been violence in education. I think nowadays this is a rising issue, not violence against the teachers as it is mentioned in the book, I think modern school violence is bulling, in Spain every once in a while you can see in the news that a child has got beaten up or even commited suicide due to this issue. I think this comes from the fact that new generations are loosing the sense of respect, and also because they have too much free time, because most of this violence starts in social media. In my previous high school I've seen disrespect towards the teachers but nothing like the five guys from the book.
ReplyDeleteAs we seen from “Farmer Boy”, we seen that school violence was a problem. As we go to mordern day society, each and every single time it increases and increase, becoming a bigger problem each day, which is quite frankly sad.
ReplyDeleteIts not like I'm proud about this but, school violence has always been a problem like what we just read in "Farmer Boy", but it just hasn't been escalated to the point where someone would shoot up a school like in todays society.
ReplyDeleteSchool violence has been a problem since schools have been around. It is a lot different now than it was back then because it would be the teachers causing the violence. Now, there is a lot of school violence caused by outside people or students. In Farmer Boy the teacher beat the kids with a whip and today people walk into schools ready to shoot. Another difference is that back then it was legal to "discipline" the kids and today we categorize school violence as guns and death threats
ReplyDeleteFarmer Boy proves to us that school violence has been around for a lot longer than our generation. However, it seems to have taken a different form - today is more about gun violence, bomb threats, and student on student. Back then, however, it seemed to be more centered around students being disciplined by the teacher and student(s) on teacher. Also, it seems to be that society's stigma around guns has taken on a viewpoint that is closer to violence and farther away from self-sustainability. However, at the time setting of Farmer Boy (where school violence is absolutely still there), a gun was not an item that was used to harm other innocent people - it was used as a tool. Also, as physically disciplining students in school became a social problem to society, the way they dealt with students changed dramatically. Today, if a teacher were to crack a student on the hands and spank them, they would immediately be fired, taken to the law, the school could be sued, and the case would probably make national news.
ReplyDeleteAs long as school is around there will be school violence. As we can see in the book farmer boy school violence has been around since school has been around, as long as their are humans going to school there will be school violence. I dont agree with but it happens its life
ReplyDeleteSchool violence has always been a problem in todays society. Its also a problem in Farmers Boy. In todays society it’s a lot worse. Kids will bring weapons to school because they are afraid or just because they were bullied. In Farmers Boy if there was a problem you were hit by the teacher with a whip. Now the school will just suspend you and that’s not really solving the problem its just pushing it off.
ReplyDeleteIn todays society, school violence has always been an issue. In the book Farmer Boy school violence is also a problem. But school has changed over time and its a lot different than what it used to be. In the book Farmer Boy, there were kids who we beat with whips and it was legal for disciplinary reasons. Today, students bring many different weapons to school like knives , guns, Tasers, etc; And there's really isn't a solution to solving these types of problems at this point of time.
ReplyDeleteI believe school violence starts with the type of environment they grow up in, and who infulences them. My father and mother grew up in the bad parts in Rochester, NY. My mom grew up on the east side, and my dad grew up on west side. alot of kids who grew up in bad neighborhoods most likely brought guns to school, sold drugs, participated in illegal activities. Some would even end up in jail. It also starts with who raises them and what they have been through, through-out their lives.this means if they didnt have a father figure nor a parent to raise them and the streets raised them then they would look to the streets. it also depends on what drives to do the things they do. fortuante for me my ;arents mved me to good town where it wasnt that many violence, but we still got threats. weve only had one time where someone brought a gun to school
ReplyDeleteViolence can’t be avoided it comes when u don’t expect it some situations are bigger to people and some have to be handled differently as far as high school most people was relaxed but high school drama is everywhere so there was fights and In farmer boy things just was different back then so the violence seems to happen a lot back in those times
